Teammate or committeeman? Enterprise and energy are the preserve of those who do, not of those who discuss. Committees exist to preserve their status and perpetuate themselves, even if that means stifling enthusiasm and curbing entreprenurial zeal on occasions. Innumerable statistics show that a high percentage of our time is spent in meetings. We have regular briefing meetings, strategy meetings, review meetings, board meetings, brainstorming sessions, appraisals and so on. Often we merely find an excuse to put off making a decision., in effect doing nothing. Are we too late to change? To quote Tom Peters: "Teammates have to depend on each other. Committee members are there to represent a point of view and retain their veto right. Committees deliberate. Project teams do." Bob Little, Editor |
